Got a serious sprained and possibly a broken bone in my wrist from a middle school kid, who thought it would be fun to jump in front of me on the Ballona Creek bike path today. Probably doing close to 20 mph on a small decline and just couldn’t get the bike to stop before I slammed into the girl. Not sure what she was thinking.
Anyway, I went over the bars, she took the bike to the body and face. No damage to the bike, but after a couple hours my right wrist is killing me and swollen. Thankfully I didn’t just plow into her as I have aero bars and she and her friends probably wouldn’t have been laughing if she had taken them to the chest.
Apparently, this is a thing with the Culver City Middle School kids. I rode up to the Culver City PD and let them know kids are blocking the bike path and literally jumping in front of cyclists. Before I even finished telling the guy behind the counter what happened, he was on the phone sending officers out there.
So I guess the lesson for me is, slow my shit down around that fucking school between 2 and 3 pm…and next time, unclip, and just kick the shit out of whoever decides it might be fun to jump in front of a cyclist. Or, just don’t ride when school is letting out.
I only recently watched The Lord of the Ring: Return of the King, and was more than a little suprised by how much the Lich King in the film matched the Lich Kind in WoW…and how much the fortress resembled the Ice Crown structures. Was it an homage from WoW to the book, or from the film to WoW?
The female team paraded their unfortunately designed kit which at a first glance would have you thinking they were naked from the waist down
I started cycling recently, and in the process bought bibs and jerseys, shoes…basically the whole kit. And with the recent uproar of the Colombian Teams, both mens and womens, kits its makes me a bit nervous.
Firstly, cycling kits are made for comfort and to enhance speed and cooling. At the same time, this makes them pretty much skin tight. So, every little bulge or whatever (backfat, belly, saggy butts, etc.) is on display. Now there are colors you can wear that tend to hide those things a bit better than others, black, red, bright colors in with crazy stripy or dots, to hide those things you don’t want peeps to be checking out…but holy cats.
That being said, these are athletes who are at their prime as far as fitness. They work like crazy to get to the level they are racing. Just do a quick google search to see what kind of training and diet is needed to do a Gran Fondo (100 ish miles). These athletes are doing thousands. So maybe it’s okay to show off a little…
But I have to say, as a man who appreciates a fit woman’s body, this kit might have gone too far, or just been a huge mistake on the designer’s part. Or both. I am excited for these women to be competing and want them to win races, but that kit is not going to enhance a win. If one of those women wins a stage, standing on the podium will not be about her ability to be the best, it will be about her kit. And for me that isn’t what sport is about.
Just my two cents. I hope the Colombian teams can do well in the race, but I’m afraid any victory will be overshadowed, or under exposed as the case may be, by the ill conveived uniform choice.
A long-distance swimmer was attacked by a great white shark today just south of the Manhattan Beach Pier, where the beach was jammed with crowds enjoying the warm holiday weekend, authorities said. The victim, identified only as a male 35 to 40
Crazy town! We see great whites all the time in the line up at El Porto, but this is the first attack. This attack happened about a mile south of where I was surfing. A solid 9 footer was spotted today by Charlie on his SUP swimming around were my friends and I were surfing, but it swam away when a couple of us paddled toward it.
Pro surfer who I’m not willing to name, paddled up to me today and wanted to know what happened to me. Apparently, someone told him I used to be a “charger” and he wanted to know the story. I’ve been out in the water with him before, and we know all the same people and talked a couple times, but today was different.
After I told him what happened, we split the set waves for about an hour. Him left, me right or him right, me left. Was pretty cool. I don’t get all weird when famous or recognized people are around me having worked in film and television for 20 years now. But when a pro wants to share waves with you, it’s an undeniable good feeling.
Had one of the best days surfing today…wasn’t huge or super consistent, but I did have a fun little sandbar all to myself for an hour and a half. Only thing that could have made it better was sharing it with my friends.
Bonus was not seeing the juvenile great white sharks (6-8’) trolling around. I’m not too concerned with getting chomped, but it is still unnerving seeing them swimming around.
